Decision-Makers

I've been an educator for over 20 years now and the most intriguing question I have encountered the last few years is: What are the jobs of the future? How do we prepare our children for the work force when we don't know what the job market will offer? These questions haunt educators as we scramble to implement technology in the educational realm. We adopt new technologies and gizmos trying to keep up with all the changes. The only constant is change!
I can imagine these question types during the Industrial Age and up through the computer age. (Are we past the computer age? Was that the 80-90's?) Every generation accepts changes and we accept the new ideas from youth.
I can see the most important gift we can give to prepare our children is the ability to question. It is important to engage students in inquiry based activities and use higher order thinking skills. This structure of education will help students become good decision-makers. Any future job will rely on the capability of people who can make decisions based on input and research abilities.
While we question what is in the future, continue to question students. Help them become decision-makers and they will embrace education with technology resources.
